“You don't have to move to Silicon Valley to do cutting edge computer science.”
- Brian Fitzpatrick, Chicago Engineering Manager
Google Chicago is a key US Sales and Engineering office located in the River North area of downtown Chicago. The Chicago Googlers are a diverse and expanding engineering group as well as a core part of our North American advertising business.
As one of the largest Google offices in the US, and located in the downtown of the third-largest city in America, you might not expect the Google Chicago office to have such an incredible culture and friendly atmosphere – but Google's Chicago location has all of that and so much more. Even as the number of employees grows by the hundreds, when you step through the front doors, you instantly see an office where we still strive to know everyone's name. Chicago Googlers actively take part in the office culture and activities, such as tech talks, book readings with local authors or our weekly celebration at IIFY (Is It Friday Yet?). In Chicago, you can organize tons of social events, participate on recreational sports teams, and do a lot outside the office in an environment where co-workers are friends.
Some of the products and technologies being developed by Chicago Google engineers include:
The Google Web Server (GWS) team builds and improves the proprietary web-serving infrastructure that powers Google web search and many other Google search properties. GWS is involved in almost every user-visible change to the google.com site, meaning that there's frequently something to write home about. We're always looking for gung-ho engineers, ideally with a background in systems and experience working with very large C++ codebases. We also occasionally drive across the country in RVs.
DoubleClick for Advertisers is Google’s display advertising platform for the world’s largest advertisers and agencies. Key to running large advertising campaigns is accurate analytics; our team in Chicago thus focuses on conversion, cost, and audience metrics and analysis. We use C++ and Java to analyze ludicrous amounts of data and turn it into intelligence for the next generation of data-savvy display advertisers.
Previously known as DoubleClick Performics Affiliate, the Google Affiliate Network allows advertisers to open their ads to all publishers in the network, or select specific publishers that match their criteria.
Our team writes code that analyzes mountains of data, and we deliver the stats that online businesses need so they can understand how the Google+ project is helping them. For example, we sift over all Google web searches and measure changes in user behavior due to +1's; this helps sites measure the impact of +1's on traffic they get from Google web search. As the Google+ project grows, we're working on more and more stats to share with the outside world, to show them how Google+ is helping them achieve their goals. And when we're away from our computers, we're out playing frolf, or eating chips and guacamole, or (sometimes) both.
This project works with multiple teams across the company to provide users of our consumer products the easiest possible avenue to import and export their data from any given Google product. See Google Takeout for an example of their handiwork.
The Transparency Engineering team is responsible for The Transparency Report, which currently includes Government Requests and Traffic. Our goals are to ensure that we maximize transparency around the flow of information related to our tools and services.
Google Code is our public-facing developer site and platform. The team in Chicago is primarily responsible for the hosting component, currently hosting over 120,000 open source projects.
